2009 Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper Sucks Thread

Love reading the comments, guys.

Mike Adams surprised me.  I was expecting a "more red flags than China" comment in there somewhere.



However, I trust the Steelers as always.  It's a gamble, but the payoff could be huge.  If they are comfortable, then so am I.  It's not like Dallas where Jerry is punching the buttons (all wrong might I add).

Selfishly I wanted Vinny Curry to be a Steeler.  Pissed that he's an Eagle, but at least he's not on another AFC North team.

Sean Spence was also unexpected, but good gravy do the Steelers put linebackers in the stable OR WHAT?  Talk about valuing a position.  Again, the B Team could be better than some LB starters.  I wonder what this pick says about their confidence in Stevenson Sylvester, who I think should get one more year to prove himself.  And what is the plan for Worilds?  Just collecting options I think.  The LBs will not be a weak spot.

Apparently the line won't either.  That's a lot of attention over the last 3 drafts.  I think that's enough unless the Steelers want to grab another guard later.

Would still like to entertain picking:
DB of some sort
late QB (like someone who can last a season)
RB steal
NT project

They still have a whole bag of picks left.  Time for some value.

LOL I dont think anyone would expect you and/or beach to say anything different. Sean Spence was so good he wasnt even on our board and I know you guys put A LOT of time and effert into it. Spence doesnt have the frame to bulkup so he will be playing at this weight or lighter or risk speed which, like Timmons, is his only strong point. I said this on another thread that Timmons needs to slim back down and only concentrate on ILB. I can see Rice and now Richardson running right up the middle and over both these guys.
Timmons needed a bigger player next to him to help clogg up the middle but the Steelers are now concentrating on stopping the pass and no longer worried about the run. It's a passing league right now so I guess that makes sence but with the players they are going after Tampa 2 isnt as far fetched as it was back in 07-08. 

No such thing. Who the hell has a "nickle LB"? You take one off the field, you don't add one. You think they're taking Timmons off the field?

I guess he was saying Spence would be used only on passing downs to cover a TE.  Instead of using an extra DB they would use him.

3-5-3 maybe ? I'm wrong ( beach,Mano ) but Troy played that type of defense on and off all year and the Steelers defense was better than it was when he was he played back in coverage. I thinki it would nice to move or be able to move Taylor back as a Safety in that type of scheme.

Here's some film on why the Steelers took this kid ... he may not be the tallest, but he brings em all down to his size ... not enough weight ?  Wow, this looks a whole lot better than the package shows ... really a good start in the draft, and now we come in the wheel house of the Steelers ... rounds 4 thru 7.

He was one of the players the Steelers had in for a visit.  I would take a chance on him if Ta' mau and Chapman are gone and draft him a round later.

This should have been started back in 05/06 and continued through 09, both Cowher and Tomlin didnt do ENOUGH IMO.

I'm not big on Adams but he's a late 2nd round pick that some had as a first round talent. I have high hopes.

I see what you are saying, and it isn't wrong.  There were many times you could call Troy the 5th LB on the field the way he comes up and plays near the LoS.  I just don't see them doing something like that with this kid.  If anything, if this kid turns out the way they are thinking, it will allow Troy to stay back more and for the team to go back to their base defense more often.

He's a LB, not a Safety.  He's athletic, but not THAT athletic.  The league is changing in the opposite direction to what you guys are implying.  Years ago you could take a small LB and turn them into a SS.  Now, you are taking bigger CBs and turning them into a SS.  You are taking big Safeties and turning them into LBs because you want guys who can move and cover in space on the second level.  The emergence of the TEs and RBs catching the ball in the middle of the field has made it imperitive that your LBs can cover these athletic guys.

Nope, Sean Spence is a LB.  Period.  He's not going to be made into a Safety of any kind.  He's not going to be a passing down specialist.  If he works out the way the Steelers are envisioning, he'll be a 3-down ILB right beside Lawrence Timmons.  It just fits with how the league is trending. 

Look at the Ravens, with Ray Rice and the two TEs.  That is the bulk of their passing game.  The Steelers need to have the most athletic group of LBs possible to combat those formations.  Same goes for the Patriots with their TEs.  The days of the big, thumper ILBs that are great in run support and on the blitz but get lost in coverage are over.

I refreshed my memory about Adams and Spence. If it's any consolation about Spence, 2k tried to tell us a couple months ago that he was a force to consider. It's hypocritical of us to love Kendricks and count out Spence for "lack of height" IMO. Spence was insanely productive and has great instincts. Those things made him improssible to ignore for me.

As for Adams...he has a strange skillset, but it's good. He moves like a LT and has a kickslide that would make Max Starks cry with envy. Yet, he's utterly massive. 6'7", 323 pounds, 34 inch arms and 11 inch hands. With that in mind, he should actually show better strength than he did. He only lifted the bench press 19 times at the combine and didn't do much better at his Pro Day. He can get stronger more easily than he can get quicker, however - I love that his skillset is that as opposed to a monstrous blob of molasses.

Adams is not a candidate to play guard. He's too tall, has no experience at guard, and probably isn't brutally strong enough. With luck he won't ever need to play guard anyway.

I didnt realize that 2012 SD and MK sucks threads and 2009 SD and MKS are the same or linked together.

I've got to say I'm very happy with the way the draft has gone thus far. We took great value in rounds one and 2 and addressed area of need in both those positions. Our line now has the potential to be one of the better units in the league and allow us to run the clock down at the end of the game.

I think Spence is going to be another good pick. He is a good football player who will play good special teams for us and learn the system behind foote for a good year or so and then hopefully take the reins? He may even get on the pitch in certain situational downs this year so it's a good pick for me. Like Mano said earlier he's essentially the same size as Lavonte David who was my second Favourite LB this year(he will rip it up for the Buccs) and most people wouldn't have minded if we took him so Spence shouldn't be any different?

The way the Steelers have built the line in this draft it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they drafted a running back, Lamar Miller springs to mind if he lasts and would be a good compliment to Redmon or even Robert Tourbin but he offers similar qualities to Rb's already on the roster.

For some reason I don't think the Steelers like Ta'amu so not sure when they will address the NT? Maybe they take Chapmen but all will be revealed shortly I suppose.
